Review and Giveaway: Kids Lunch Box Cards

September 24, 2008 by Deb

Last year, my oldest daughter started first grade.  Our first experience with all-day school, taking or buying lunches – the whole thing. I’d had a great plan to make her these wonderful, nutritious lunches to send with her, and visions of sending cutesy little notes every day in her lunch. But, after the second or third time of writing the same little ‘Hi there, hope you’re having a good day! Love, Mommy’ note, I gave up. In a hurry to get outside for recess, she wasn’t taking the time to read them anyway, and I was running out of time in the mornings to write them as well.

This year, I’ve discovered something that makes it so much easier to send fun notes along in her lunchbox for her not only to read herself, but also to share with friends at the lunch table. Thanks to the Family Review Network, I was able to receive a sample of KidsLunchBoxCards to try out in my daughter’s lunches.

What they are:

website riddles KidsFunCards.com is owned by two moms who teamed together to create a unique, fun product to help ease the separation anxiety and loneliness that kids sometimes feel at the school lunch table. Together with other family members, they’ve built a business that offers “a hug in a lunchbox”.

The cards are similar to a standard postcard (and are that same size as well), being preprinted with drawings, riddles, fun facts or other interesting things on one side, and the other side having blank area to write a message and/or to address the card if sending it through the mail. Each pack contains five KidsFunCards_009cards – enough to add in your child’s lunchbox for a week, and packs are available in five different themes – “Ewww, That’s Gross”, “Real Looney Laws”, “Mystical Little People”, “It’s a Wacky World” and “Riddles” (include scratch-off answers).

Here’s my our take on them:

I’ve used the five cards in the ‘Riddles’ pack in my daughter’s lunches over the past couple of weeks since school began (she buys her lunch on some days and brings it on others). I didn’t tell her about them, but just started sticking the cards (with a very simple personal message on the back) in her lunchbox, to see what she would think.

KidsFunCards_008 KidsFunCards_002

She came home that first day with a big smile on her face and immediately had to pull the card out of her backpack to show me that she’d saved it. And she’s saved the other four cards as well, so she could share the riddles with her younger sister at home. She’s started looking much more forward to the ‘take lunch’ days so she can see what riddle shows up in her lunchbox next.

I like that there’s space to write a personal message as well as the pre-printed drawings and fun content on the card. And I think that it’s a great way for a socially-challenged child like my daughter to help ‘break the ice’ at the lunch table.  I am a bit worried now that we’re out of the ‘Riddles’ series – in my daughter’s case, I’m not sure how some of the other cards would go over, especially the “Ewww, That’s Gross” theme. However, I can see that one being a big draw possibly for boys.  :)

The other thing I really like about these cards in general is that you can send them through the mail just as a regular postcard as well as using them in lunch boxes. This is a great way to have younger siblings who aren’t in school yet still be able to get a special treat, just in the mail instead of at school. Or you can simply send them as a ‘pick-me-up’ to your own kids or others, for whatever reason you may want to.

The bottom line:

KidsLunchBoxCards are an easy and fun way to include a message to your child in their lunchbox (or through the mail), and give them a great icebreaker for making new friends at the lunch table.

Where can you find them?:

You can order packs of KidsLunchBoxCards directly from the website at http://kidsfuncards.com. Each pack of 5 cards is $4.95 (plus $2.99 shipping and handling).  You can also purchase them from several retailers in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Washington and New Mexico as well.

Would you like to try them?:

I would use these in my son’s lunch box. My son has very low self esteem and confidence and doesn’t really have any friends. I think something like this with a person message on them (maybe alternate between me and my husband) with a positive message on it might be great for him. I know he loves it when I stick notes and other goodies in his lunch box (sometimes a sticker or a small piece of candy like a Tootsie Roll). He usually ends up saving the stuff too.

Thank you for a great giveaway.

I have been putting postcards in Noah’s lunch box periodically lat year and this year. He always saves them, but never talks about them. I think they make him feel good, but because he’s a boy, he doesn’t talk about them. I think the joke ones would be very fun for him and he would be more comfortable sharing them with his friends.

I think my 5 year old daughter would enjoy finding these in her lunch box on the days she carries her lunch from home instead of buying at school. I really like the Wacky World and the Riddle ones.

    Thanks for the entry.

Oh, these cards are so cute. Since only one of my kids is beginning to read, I’d have to put these in my oldest son’s lunchbox. When I remember, I slip a post-it note in his box with a funny drawing or sticker on it…. but these are so much better! Thanks!

Moth of my girls would love to get these in their lunchboxes. My oldest has been asking if I can put little notes in her lunch, but I am usually at a loss as to what to write besides “I love you! Have a great day!”

The riddle ones look great, as do the looney laws. I know that my youngest would like the mystical little people though – she loves anything remotely related to fairies!

    Thanks for having this contest!
