Works For Me Wednesday #13 – Snacks

So this isn’t necessarily a product-related WFMW – but I wanted to share it anyway. It’s a continuation of a post that I wrote recently on my personal blog, Mom of 3 Girls, about how to handle snacks for our family.
You can check out the entire post over there if you wish, but in essence, what I decided to do is to save on the extra cost of those expensive but handy ‘convenience’ packs of snacks by creating my own.
I’ve made the commitment to do this after every grocery shopping trip – and so far I’ve managed to stick to that. What I do is to take any boxes or bags of crackers or other types of snacks that I purchased, and immediately divide them out into the snack-sized baggies:
All of our snacks are now kept in one drawer in the kitchen – and our girls are responsible for grabbing their own snacks every morning for school.
Not only does this help in terms of convenience – but so far I’m finding that we’re wasting a lot less food. Previously, boxes of crackers would get opened, then shoved to the back of a shelf or drawer, and were quite stale by the time we unearthed them again. At least now, if one snack baggie gets ruined, then it doesn’t affect the rest of them. I also try to re-use the baggies as much as possible, to keep the waste down that way as well. It definitely works for me!

Oh would you just look at that drawer. Now that is a thing of beauty.
I’d love to this organised, I’ll just have to make more of an effort.
Great post.
I LOVE this idea! Awesome! The only time I ever buy those convenience packs is if we’re going to be traveling… but not anymore! Thank you for enlightening me with such a simple, why-didn’t-I-think-of-that idea!
Wow that is a great idea! I know, those “convenience packs” are expensive! Maybe I’ll try this. Thanks for the idea!
Great thinking! I have a little drawer space and will give this a try.
I used to do this, but fell off the wagon. I need to start back because it’s exhausting asking my older kids how many crackers have they ate, etc, every couple of minutes
That’s brilliant! I’m so tired of making lunches. If I had at least the snack part in bags already I’d save half the time.
Love, love, love this idea. I have a new box for pre-packaged snacks but I was actually wondering what ot do about boxed stuff. Thank you!
Girl, I love this idea!! Next time we go shopping I’m buying some of those little baggies, and this is going to be my new thing. THANKS!

I love this idea. I don’t have an extra drawer, so i think I’ll just put them back in the empty box. Thanks!

Brilliant! Another reason to go to Sam’s!
Hey! I used to do that! Hmmm I don’t know why I ever stopped! Thanks for the reminder!
Now, why didn’t I think of that??
I love everything about it… the convience, the money saving, the portion control…
I can’t wait to start using this tip. love, Love, LOVE it. Thanks & Blessings, Whitney
What a fantastic idea! I need to do this, the kids are scrambling in the morning to grab a snack sometimes.
Great idea! I do this too! It’s true that you waste less and save more! It’s great when you buy bulk and then it stays fresher longer. It also lets my almost 4 yr old choose his own snacks. Thanks for sharing!!
I love this idea!! I don’t have any extra drawers but I have baskets I keep in the cupboard. This is a perfect way to use them!
I’m envious of your drawer! Great idea.
I’m going to convert a drawer soon….inspiring post.
[...] have lasted much longer and the kids enjoy being able to see all the choices. I got the idea from this WFMW post – go check out her idea & [...]
I love your drawer! My boys would, too! The portion control factor is exactly what our family needs. Thanks for the great idea!
