Ugh, I apologize for not getting the regular weekly edition of Deals & Steals up – if you’d like to know what was going on over my weekend, you can get a good idea at my other site. This edition will include everything I’ve got for either pre-Thanksgiving or post-Thanksgiving (Black Friday or Cyber Monday) deals. So, here’s the information I’ve come across and want to pass along to you! ![]()
Note: Many of these are not in my own words, but taken straight from the e-mail or press release that I received. I have re-worded or re-written where I thought it was necessary or helpful, but am not responsible for the content of these items or anything that may be posted on their sites.

This Thanksgiving kick-up your feet and watch as Ocean Spray’s “Woodland Family Gathering” float makes its way through the 83rd Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®. This year, Ocean Spray welcomes “30 Rock’s” Jane Krakowski who will perform the new song titled, “With You, I’m Home”. Many say that cranberries were served at the first Thanksgiving in 1621. Commemorating this special feast, Ocean Spray’s float will honor the first Thanksgiving meal, hosted by an adorable array of woodland creatures.
Tune into the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC, Thursday, Nov. 26 from 9 am – 12 pm (all time zones) to view the multitude of performances that will fill the streets of Manhattan!

I recently had the opportunity, through Global Influence (formerly Momfluence) to attend a web presentation with Scott Silverman of the National Retail Federation and Shop.org & Beth Jordan of AVG about safe online shopping tips for Cyber Monday (the online version of Black Friday, held the Monday after Thanksgiving). Here are some of the tips that were shared:
Safety:
- Be sure to shop on reputable, trust-worthy sites such as CyberMonday.com and its retail partners
- Just as you’re more careful when shopping in busy malls during the holiday, be more careful online as well
- AVG offers free downloads of virus scan and link scan here: www.shop.org/shopsafely and http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
Tips:
- Look for the “S” for Security: Make sure the sites you are shopping from are secure and have “HTTPS” in the URL. The “S” ensures security. Also, look for the padlock symbol and research shopping sites at locations such as shopzilla.com and pricegrabber.com.
- Stay Current on Security Software: Make sure you have the latest virus protection software updates from your provider before you start your holiday shopping.
- Think Before You Link: Employ a URL scanning tool to ensure you’re not clicking on links that lead to infected websites. Free tool here: http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
- Keep Your Private Information Private: Make sure you keep your personal information private. Create a separate e-mail account just for shopping and use a unique password. Keep records of your online shopping by printing confirmation pages and e-mail confirmations.
- Mix Up Your Passwords: Each e-mail, bank, credit card account should have a unique password. Write them down and store them in a secure location.
These tips can all be found at www.shop.org/shopsafely
Deals:
42% of Americans will buy at least one gift online this holiday season. Online sales are expected to increase about eight percent this holiday season while overall retail sales are expected to fall one percent.
Why people spend online:
- the ability to shop at all hours of the day
- easier to compare prices
- free shipping
- convenience
- avoiding crowds
- easier to find items
CyberMonday.com aggregates the best deals from their 600 retail partners, all on one site. You can find sites offering free shipping by choosing “free shipping offers” on the top right of the site, and the site also contains a “Deal of the Week,” special offers, and coupons.
Giveaways:
Now through Cyber Monday (11/30), $250 in gift cards from Shop.org’s retail partners will be given away daily at the Cyber Monday Twitter account and Facebook account.
To stay up to date on new information regarding online shopping safety and deals this holiday season you can:
- find safe shopping tips w/ links to AVG downloads at www.shop.org/shopsafely
- shop www.cybermonday.com for the best deals online
- download AVG free link scanning software: http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

UncleVic.com, a discount consumer electronics online retailer, announced plans for its Black Friday promotional plans today. The company sells various popular brand name consumer electronics and gaming products, video games & accessories, LCD monitors, printers, flatscreen TVs, digital picture frames, laptops, PC’s and other electronics products and accessories.
For Black Friday (11/27/2009) and Cyber Monday (11/30/09), UncleVic.com will be selling dozens of various products for one penny ( $0.01 plus shipping) as part of its Penny Pincher Promotion. In addition, UncleVic.com will post other heavily discounted products on its Black Friday Landing page.
“We’re stoked about Black-Friday this year,” says Jim Wendt, Marketing Manager at UncleVic.com. “We launched last year right before Black Friday so this is sort of like Uncle Vic’s huge 1st birthday party. All day throughout Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Vic’s Picks special offers for one cent will appear on our home page randomly. First come first served. We had a great first year so we wanted to give back to our customers and generate some buzz”.
UncleVic.com will also have special deals posted on its Black Friday landing page. “We are directing customers to http://www.UncleVic.com/BlackFriday on November 27th and 30th where we will post some of our best offers of the year” according to Wendt.
Uncle Vic will be donating to charity one dollar for every transaction on Black Friday. The company has selected 6 charities: Boys and Girls Clubs of America; PETA; CHOC; American Red Cross; Make-A-Wish Foundation; and Toys for Tots. The company will donate proceeds according to the results of its Facebook Fan Page Poll where Uncle Vic’s friends will determine the percentage of donations each charity will receive. Uncle Vic’s Fan Page can be found at http://www.facebook.com/UncleVicDeals.
“I’m a big believer in giving back”, says Vikas Vanjani, the company’s CEO and namesake founder. “We’re interested in seeing how our customers decide how we allocate the donations”.
To help promote Uncle Vic’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, the company also launched a YouTube video which can be accessed at http://www.DontTellEverybody.com and the company’s You Tube channel page: http://www.youtube.com/unclevicdeals. “The video plays on our theme of phenomenal deals but limited inventory,” says Wendt. “Our deals tend to sell out quickly so we have to constantly source new stuff for our customers. With Thanksgiving less than a week away, many will be heading to their local grocery store to stock up on pumpkin products for the holiday although buyer, be forewarned, there may be a shortage this year.
Nestlé Baking has announced that it expects a shortage of LIBBY’S® Pumpkin on store shelves as the country enters the holiday season. Heavy rains persisted throughout the 13-week harvest in Morton, Illinois, frustrating efforts to pick the entire crop. As a result, less pumpkin has been picked and canned, leading to an anticipated shortage of LIBBY’S pumpkin products as the holidays approach.
“We know that LIBBY’S Pumpkin, with the LIBBY’S Famous Pumpkin Pie Recipe on the label, plays an important role in the traditional holiday meal,” said Paul Bakus, Vice President/General Manager, Nestlé Baking. “Libby’s has been a part of that tradition for more than 80 years and we appreciate that honor. That’s why we wanted to alert bakers to the anticipated shortage. Our calculations indicate that we may deplete our inventory of canned LIBBY’S pumpkin as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday.”
The company plants thousands of acres of farmland with LIBBY’S Select seed in the spring. In fact, Nestlé added acreage this season since the 2008 harvest also had been diminished by poor weather.
Harvest generally begins in late August and continues until all the pumpkins are picked. This year, heavy rains saturated the pumpkin fields, making it nearly impossible for tractors and other equipment to operate. Nestlé agricultural experts evaluate crop conditions throughout the season and monitor the quality of the fruit during harvest. Currently, acres of pumpkins sit unharvested in Morton, the “pumpkin capital of the world”. The longer the pumpkins sit in these muddy fields, the more likely it is the quality of the pumpkin has declined. Officials have determined that pumpkin which fails to meet Nestlé’s quality standards will be plowed under, once the fields dry, to enrich the soil for the 2010 season.
As a result of the weather and the company’s commitment to picking and packing only quality fruit, the 2009 inventory of canned pumpkin will be smaller than planned. Nestlé is continuing to ship the last of the already canned inventory. When it is gone, there will be no more pumpkin available until the 2010 harvest. This is why the company believes a shortage of LIBBY’S pumpkin is likely.
“If only we could have changed the weather!” said Bakus. “We hope Mother Nature is nicer to us next year, hopefully delivering less rain and more sunshine. If you are unable to find Libby’s 100 percent Pure Pumpkin at your local grocers, we apologize and hope you will understand.”
To try and help bakers who may be disappointed by the shortage, Bakus is encouraging bakers to visit www.VeryBestBaking.com, where they’ll find new recipes added to the pie collection.

At a time of year when many consumers find themselves sliding deeper into debt, SmartyPig has announced cash boosts of up to 12% when shoppers save for splurges using SmartyPig’s online piggy bank. In addition to doubling the maximum cash boost, the new program added category-leading retailers such as Barnes & Noble Booksellers, GameStop and The Gap to SmartyPig’s partner roster.
“The holidays can put a financial strain on anybody, and using credit cards for purchases only adds to the debt hangover,” said Bob Weinschenk, CEO of SmartyPig, citing the Consumer Reports Holiday Shopping Poll which found that six percent of Americans—some 13.5 million consumers—continue to carry debt from last winter’s holiday season. “At SmartyPig we encourage people to plan their spending by automating their savings and help them focus on goals. We reward them with one of the top interest rates in the country and the option to invite friends and family to contribute to their goals. On top of that, they can get a cash boost of up to 12% when they meet a savings goal and choose to shop with one of the retailers in our program.” According to Weinschenk, saving for the holidays currently ranks among the top 10 most popular savings goals among SmartyPig customers.
Like a modern, high-tech piggy bank, SmartyPig allows its customers to create specific savings goals and determine a saving schedule. SmartyPig automates regular deposits from a customer’s existing checking or savings account into their FDIC insured SmartyPig account, and tracks their progress while offering one of the most competitive interest rates in the country, 2.01% (APY). Equipped with social networking features, SmartyPig also gives savers the option of involving friends and family in the process via services like Facebook and Twitter, so that they can check in on saving progress and even contribute toward goals like honeymoons, graduation trips or family reunions.
Until now, SmartyPig customers who reached a savings goal were offered three choices: transfer the savings plus interest back to an existing checking or savings account, receive it on a SmartyPig MasterCard® debit card (which can be used anywhere MasterCard® is accepted) or opt to put it on a gift card from a name brand retailer. SmartyPig’s new redemption program offers more flexibility, allowing consumers to parse out their savings among those options, splitting their money as they see fit. An intuitive interface allows savers to explore their choices and dynamically calculate how each choice impacts their bottom line. Retail partners are handpicked based on their relevance to common savings goals and their ability to best service the needs of SmartyPig’s customers. For a complete list of SmartyPig partners visit http://www.smartypig.com/about/best-in-class.
Finally, and most importantly, SmartyPig has doubled the maximum cash boost it offers through best-in-class retailers. Now, when customers meet their savings goal they can realize up to 12% in cash boosts paid to them by SmartyPig on retail gift cards whose products and services directly relate to their savings goals. So, an individual who wants to make a minimum initial deposit of $25 and put away $300 a month over twelve months for a new living room set will deposit $3,625 and earn approximately $25 in interest over the course of that year, bringing the goal balance to $3,650. But, for example, if she opts to take her savings out on a Macy’s gift card, SmartyPig will give her a cash boost of 12% (nearly $440) on a Macy’s retail gift card, bringing her goal plus interest plus boost to $4,090− some $465 more than the $3,625 she had put away.
