Review: Kellogg’s Cinnabon Snack Bars

I absolutely love cinnamon rolls. They are one big indulgence that I have little willpower over. Back when my husband used to have weekends off too, we would usually end up with a batch of them for breakfast one morning every weekend – the kind you buy in the refrigerated tube. I’ve also become quite fond of the ones you can get from a certain popular fast-food restaurant (starts with an ‘M’…). But it wasn’t until I was stuck overnight in Cleveland on my way to the Campbell’s headquarters in New Jersey last winter that I was finally able to actually taste a real Cinnabon roll again (the one in our mall closed years ago and there isn’t another one close by) – there’s one in the airport there, and the smell just wafts right down the terminal…  Yum.  :)

What I was excited to learn recently is that you can now get that same great Cinnabon taste in a snack bar that you can eat right at home.

What they are:

CinnabonBars

Kellogg’s Cinnabon Snack Bars are made with delicious brown sugar and cinnamon filling and cream cheese frosting that combines the decadence of Cinnabon with a convenient, wholesome bar. At only 150 calories each, these snack bars are also an indulgence you don’t have to feel guilty about!

Each box contains six snack bars that can be eaten right out of the package, or warmed for a few seconds in the microwave if you wish. Either way, they are a handy option for on-the-go or can be enjoyed at home by the whole family.

Courtesy of Kellogg’s and Mom Central, we received a box of these snack bars to try out and review.

Here’s my take on them:

Let’s just start off by saying that I had every intention of taking some cute pictures of my kids trying out these snack bars. However, once I tasted them, I realized that I was not going to be sharing. Any of them. With the kids or anyone else.

Nope, these were mine. And no, I have no pictures of myself eating any of them – mainly because they didn’t last very long, and they also had happened to arrive right at the beginning of a very busy week for me, that included having to get the girls up early and driven across town to VBS every morning. These made a perfect breakfast that I could grab and eat quickly in the car. And of course, then I had to try a couple of them warmed at home as well. All in the interest of a balanced review, of course.  ;)

I was afraid that the snack bars wouldn’t hold together very well and that they would end up a crumbly mess all over my clothes. And I did have to be a bit careful with them, especially while in the car. But overall, they were much less messy than I thought they would be. The taste isn’t quite exactly like a true cinnamon roll, but I really didn’t care – they are still delicious. One bar doesn’t fill you up very much though, so I don’t know that I’d recommend them for a breakfast substitute unless you’ve got something else to eat as well, or you don’t have long to wait until lunch. But they seem to be just about right for a quick snack, to hold you over until the next meal – or to satisfy that sweet tooth nagging at you for sweet, cinnamon goodness.

They are very good both right out of the package and when warmed. I guess it really depends on what you’re in the mood for, and whether or not you have access to a microwave at the time. I definitely wouldn’t recommend toasting these – the box doesn’t mention using a toaster, and I don’t know that they would stay together completely if toasted. I found that about 5-10 seconds in the microwave worked perfectly to just give them a hint of warmth without having to worry about burning your tongue. Microwaves vary so much though, that I’d be careful to figure out exactly what works best for you.

The bottom line:

Kellogg’s Cinnabon Snack Bars are a tasty indulgence that you don’t have to feel so guilty about. Whether you grab one on the go, or enjoy them warmed up at home, they provide a satisfying but much healthier alternative to running out to your local Cinnabon whenever you’re craving something cinnamon-ish and gooey.

Where can you find them?:

You can purchase Kellogg’s Cinnabon Snack Bars at most grocery stores or wherever other Kellogg’s snacks are sold.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Kellogg’s and received a sample to facilitate my candid review. In addition, Mom Central sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.

There’s a $1 coupon for these available at coupons.com this month, too.

They may taste kind of good, but I wouldn’t really call them a “perfect breakfast.” They fill you up, but they’re empty calories–only negligible amounts of fiber and protein. Also, they’re high-fat. I bought somme just to try them, but I won’t repurchase because they are basically just pure junk food.
