Review and Giveaway: Bright Green™

As a mom, one realization that I’ve come to over the past year or two is that so many of the ‘traditional’ cleaning products that we’ve used all our lives (and our parents used as well) are simply not good – either for the environment or for us to be breathing the fumes from, touching or letting our kids be around. It’s been exciting to see so many companies begin to offer products that are made with naturally derived ingredients, eco-friendly, biodegradable and/or energy-efficient. One of the newest product lines for home care cleaning and laundry soaps is Bright Green™, which is sold exclusively at Safeway stores.
What they are:
Bright Green™ is a line of household products developed to have naturally derived and biodegradable ingredients, post-consumer recycled content and energy efficiency. There are over 20 products in the line, which includes cleaning and laundry products, paper products and high-efficiency light bulbs.
Specific items include both hand and automatic dishwashing soap, floor, window and bathroom cleaners, laundry detergent, bleach, fabric softener, bath and facial tissues, napkins and paper towels.
The Bright Green™ paper products are all made with 100% recycled fiber and are whitened without elemental chlorine. Cleaning and laundry products are biodegradable, made from naturally derived ingredients and even the packaging is recyclable or made from a percentage of post-consumer waste.
I received two Bright Green™ products to try out – the Dish Washing Liquid (Natural Lavender Scent) and the All Purpose Cleaner (Lemon Scent). I also received a fun re-usable shopping bag with the Bright Green logo.
Here’s my take on them:
I’ve found that I relax so much more when cleaning with products that don’t contain harsh chemicals and fumes. I also appreciate that these are packaged in clear containers so it’s very easy to see that they are dye-free (and to see how much you have left).
I had an opportunity to use the All Purpose Cleaner almost immediately after the products arrived – well, with small kids in the house, I’m pretty much using cleaners every day. This one works very well on everything I’ve tried – dirt, grime, spilled milk or juice, and even blood (I have two daughters who tend to get bloody noses fairly often when it’s dry in the wintertime). And the lemon scent is just enough to feel fresh without being overpowering.
The Dish Washing Liquid is also lightly scented with lavender, one of my favorites. We don’t use hand dish washing soap very often, but it’s wonderful to have on hand for those quick washes when you need a pan or bowl (or spoon) quickly without having to run a full wash in the dishwasher. I’ve had no trouble getting our dishes clean with it – even our (one) saucepan that my husband tends to forget to soak or rinse after he uses.
The shopping bag is awesome, for two main reasons. It’s nice and durable (made from 65% recycled materials and 35% cotton), which is good – but it’s huge and holds an amazing amount of items. And it also has a handy loop at the top, below the handles, so it hangs easily on those bag carousels or racks at the grocery store – perfect for helping hold it open until it’s full enough to sit on its own. I’ve seen only a couple of other bags that have a loop like this. I do wish that it folded up with some type of fastener, but it’s easy enough to fold and I keep a rubber band around it to keep it that way.
The bottom line:
Bright Green™ cleaning and paper products are environmentally and family friendly and work just as well as the traditional ones. What an easy and fun way to ‘go green’ and have the peace of mind that comes with avoiding chemicals that can damage both our health and the environment.
Where can you find them?:
Unfortunately (at least for me), Bright Green products are sold exclusively at Safeway stores – the closest of which to West Michigan is in Chicago. But, for those of you who do have Safeway available in your area, keep an eye out for Bright Green™ on your local store’s shelves.
Also, don’t forget to stock up on those re-usable bags – Safeway credits customers $.05 each time they use any reusable bag at checkout!
Would you like to try them?:
I have the opportunity to give two winners each a Bright Green re-usable shopping bag like the one I received, and also 5 coupons each for discounts on Bright Green products! If you have a Safeway store in your area and would like to try cleaning or paper products from Bright Green, here are the rules:
