I think I may have mentioned somewhere in the past that I have at least one daughter who’s a bit doggie crazy.
Which is pretty much an understatement. The truth is that I have two daughters who are completely and utterly in love with doggies and especially with puppies. Even my self-professed kitty-loving daughter has a soft spot for puppies as well.
Which is why, when I had the opportunity to review the two DVDs from the Puppytown series, I had the feeling that this would be one review in which the conclusion would be foregone hardly before the girls had even seen a moment of the DVDs.
Yep, I was right.
What they are:
Puppytown is a children’s DVD series that entertains and teaches young children about puppies and dogs. There are two DVDs – Puppytown, The Movie and Puppytown, Growing Up. Both of the DVDs feature original children’s songs as well as a lot of footage of – puppies, doing everything from eating, sleeping, playing and everything else that puppies do.
The DVDs offer a positive message about animals, especially dogs in particular. In Puppytown, kids are shown and taught about responsibility for pets, and how much effort it takes to care for puppies. Then Puppytown, Growing Up, shows kids all of the different things that puppies can ‘be when they grow up’, from rescue dogs to fire dogs and herding dogs. Each DVD also comes with a CD containing the songs used on that particular DVD as well.
Here’s my our take on them:
All three of my girls were mesmerized by the Puppytown DVDs from the moment I first put them on. Oh they have their preferences – my oldest loves the Puppytown, The Movie DVD while my 6-year-old definitely would rather watch Puppytown, Growing Up. My youngest doesn’t seem to care, as long as it means that she gets to watch puppies in action.
I asked my daughters what they like the best about the DVDs. Their answers ranged from ‘the music’ to ‘seeing what puppies can grow up to be’ and ‘there are puppies in it!’. I guess that just about sums it up.
I’ve watched the DVDs with the girls, and I like them a lot as well. I love that the DVDs talk about and teach responsibility toward pets, without seeming or sounding ‘preachy’ about it. I like that the girls are so exciting about watching something that doesn’t involve cartoon characters and that’s not only appropriate for them to see, but educational as well. And of course, I love the adorable puppies.
All three of my girls seem to have the need to ‘become’ puppies when they watch the DVDs, which becomes a very loud and energetic game at times. Then again, the girls tend to pretend to be puppies at other times anyway, so it’s not like I’m not used to it. They do love to sing the songs too and have most of them memorized now.
The bottom line:
If you have someone on your gift-giving list who’s a puppy fan, or who even just can’t resist the sweet eyes and soft, cuddly fur of a puppy, then this DVD set is a great option for under your tree this holiday season. I mean after all, who can resist puppies?
Where can you find them?:
Each of the DVDs is available as a 2-disc set (DVD plus CD), and can be purchased directly from the website at http://www.puppytown.com. They are also available on Amazon and at other retailers, both online and in stores. The list price for each DVD set is $19.99.
